Ecuador were left to rue a missed penalty by Enner Valencia as they stormed back from a three-goal half-time deficit before losing 3-2 to Bolivia.
El Verde were superb in the first half with goals from Raldes, Smedberg and a Martins Moreno penalty opening up a seemingly unassailable lead.
However, West Ham forward Valencia saw his successful 43rd-minute spot-kick disallowed only for superb Bolivia goalkeeper Romel Quinonez to save the retake.
Valencia and a brilliant Bolanos strike eight minutes from time were just reward for an improved second-half display but Bolivia held firm with their goalkeeper in inspired form.
